A few of previously constructed puppets. This year we are holding puppet building workshops on every Sunday plus one Saturday in June. Dates are: 1, 8, 15, 21, 22 and 29 June. 1 to 4 PM in the Gordon R. Snow Community Centre. Emphasis will be on smaller puppets that are small enough for short people to carry. Materials will be supplied but you can bring your own too. For more details contact Heather at 225-2823. All puppets constructed will be asked to participate in the Fall River Canal Days parade on 1 July.
We just added the Program for July 1st to our website.
You can find it at: http://www.fallrivercanaldays.ca/program-2014.html Please tell your friends! July 1 was a great day with lots of amazing events and lots of people to cheer.
Come on out on July 2 to see the fun dog show, go on a hike, visit the Historical Archives (LWF Hall), see art and giant puppets on display, and enjoy the music at the gazebo (Snow Community Centre). We hope you have time to join the parade on July 1.
We meet at the Old Recreation Centre at Hwy #2 and walk up to the new Snow Community Centre. Parade starts at 11 a.m. All traffic will be stopped during the parade on Hwy #2 and Fall River Road. The giant puppets will be on display after the parade in the Snow Community Centre. Saturday, June 11 from 1-4 p.m. at the LWF Hall is the last chance to get your hands on the giant puppets. We are finishing of the painting of the puppets, hands, and rods.
Hope to see you there. Again a big Thank You to all the community members that came out over the last three month to create and help with the puppets. May 7 was the start of our hands-on community workshops.
We started with building two historical figures, a dragon, Canal Days flags, and a very special ladybug. Twenty-one community members got together to paint, papier-machée, design, and glue. The collaborations went well and everyone helped each other out. We also had some good laughs when we discovered that the historical figure we chose was one of the members father-in-law. For more pictures of the workshop please go here. We will continue our creative workshops on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 from 1 – 4 p.m. at the LWF Community Hall, Fall River. On Saturday May 7th we will start to build the first giant puppets.
The portraits of various historical figures will give us some inspiration for the attire of the two historical figures we like to create. The third giant puppet to be started that day is a dragon (Fall River Dragon Football Team’s mascot). This first hands-on workshop starts at 1 p.m at the LWF Community Hall. We will also create flags to add colour to the Canal Days and masks that will be used at the Fall River Canal Days’ Parade (July 1st). Come alone, with your friends, neighbours or your whole family. Workshops are free and refreshments will be provided. Fall River Community Members have decided on the giant puppets. Now it is up to you to lend your talent and hands-on help to bring the giant puppets to life.
During the creation workshops we will also work on masks for young and old that want to walk in the parade. Do you want to join in as a pileated woodpecker, dragon, historical figure, or a skateboarder? The choice is yours. Or perhaps you like to create colourful flags to announce the Fall River Canal Days. Either or I am sure your ideas will enrich the whole project. Note your calendar for the first workshop on Saturday, May 7th from 1-5 p.m. at the LWF Hall (Bay area). Please download the workshop schedule here. On Saturday, March 19th community members met to listen and share their stories about Fall River. We listened to a winter story; as children they would water the path up from the Fall River Train Station to slide down just when most people would get home from work.
We were also intrigued by a story about a large big black cat that had been seen in our region. Stories about the history and the present time came to live. Thank you to all 16 community members that came out to share their stories and ideas for the building of the giant puppets. Our giant puppets will depict the past and present time. Two Historical Figures where chosen that will represent the early settlers and celebrate the founders of schools and churches. A Dragon will be in the parade as well to represent the Lockview Dragon Football Team. The group also likes to create a Paliated Woodpecker and a Skateboarder. We are looking forward to our first hands-on workshop on Saturday, May 7th from 1-5 p.m. at the LWF Hall (Bay area). Please contact us if you have any questions. For the second time the Fall River Canal Days will be held from July 1-3. Various events are already in the planning stages. The festivities will start with a parade on July 1st and end with spectacular fireworks on July 3rd.
If you are interested in participating with your organization in the parade please contact us. The parade will be accompanied by giant puppets. Join us in building those puppets during free workshops facilitated by community members for community members of all ages. The giant puppets will depict historical characters of the Fall River area. Our first workshop on March 19th will be a storytelling circle where we share and listen to stories of our area from far back to present. Out of those stories we will pick four characters that will inspire our giant puppet building. Admission is free, no registration necessary. Story Telling Circle: Saturday, March 19th from 2-4 p.m. at the Snow Community Centre. You can join us for just one or for all workshops. The giant puppet workshops are supported through a generous grant from the 4C’s Foundation. All ages are welcome. Children under twelve must be accompanied by an adult. For more information please contact us or download a flyer with all workshop dates. |
